Thailand: Are we ready to move on?
Moving forward in the economical progress can be a little difficult, especially when the country has just recovered from the worst political crises in the century. Unfortunately, Thailand has suffered far more than just political crises. The inundation of many different provinces due to the inability of the authority to regulate the water current from many dams in the northern part of the country has generated much more serious problems for Thailand's economy. No matter what comes in our sight, today there is a question that we have to ask ourselves. Are we ready to move on?
In the year 2011, Thailand has experienced an economic growth of 1.5%*, which placed our country to be the 158th nation with most economic growth from the list of 185 nations. Not pretty impressive isn't it?
As economists, we must ask ourselves. What kind of policy should the authority enforce? For the current government, they have chosen to raise the minimum wages for the workers in order to provide the workers with insignificant income to receive the higher wages. To my point of view, the government does not only hope to sustain the promises they made during the election campaign. But also, they are pretty much hoping that the workers with less income will eventually prosper, and that could lean toward the higher macro economic growth for the nation.
By choosing this step, they must be very careful. They must also notice that higher minimum wages can easily increase the unemployment rate or even the mass illegal migration of the people from the poorer nations surrounding Thailand. To my point of view, higher minimum wage may also cause many more problems for the country as the whole, if the policy is not carefully regulated. Especially the augmentation of the inflation rate which may eventually cause the Thai currency to eventually decrease.
Despite the possible errors, what could the country benefits from higher income of the people? Of course, the people like me (who are not working at a minimum wage) may not really receive much of the direct benefits. For me, I will only receive the benefits when Thailand's economy has been prospered. That means conducting business in Thailand will then be much more beneficial due to the increased rate of economic transaction, or whatever you may refer as the economic growth.
At this time, there are many debates about this topic by many "adult" economists. To me, I believe the best thing we can do right now is to sit down and watch if the current authority's policy would be a success for the country. If yes, hooray for our country! If not, then we must start to think about the possible remedy process which might then take some time to accomplish.

Thailand Real Estates, where do we stand?
Every newly industrialized country is quite likely to focus on foreign investments in terms of real estates. Thailand, just like the Midwest region of the United States, has gone through a huge change from being a solely agriculture economy into the newly industrialized economy with focus on modern trades and the manufacture of products.
Since the rise of the nation from the "Tom Yum Kung" crises (in which I will later post more about that), Thai property market has experienced a huge augmentation in terms of sizes. Today, hundreds of high-end projects are emerging out of every corners of the town, not only in Sukhumvit or Sathorn district, but in the areas surrounding the town center as well. The main question is, can there be any limitation in its growth?
If we want to find out an answer, we must first notice that most of the customers for the higher class real estates are foreigners. Although there are some Thais who have adequate capital to purchase, it is still undeniable that the booming real estates economy is depending much on the foreign capital.
However, there is always a limitation despite the supply of higher class properties. Please notice very carefully that whenever the supply surpasses the demand, the property's prizes will eventually drop. Unfortunately, it is also very difficult to raise its demand to sustain the property's prizes if the supply has increased too much. This is what I believe the government should notice.
I am not saying that the government should restrict the construction of the newer projects. On the other hand, I do cheerfully support it. As long as the government knows how to keep the demand of the property high, by taking an initiative to develop our country's reputation as a world hub for high-end living.
Take a look at the examples from property markets in Florida and Italy, if Thailand has a national reputation as the world's leading high-end destination, imagine how much Thailand will eventually prosper.

What is more important? "Self" or "Society"
It is extremely hard to resist the fact that people do concern about themselves much more than they do for the society. No matter citizens or politicians. Under the democratic political system of Thailand, it is important that the politicians must gain the favor from the people in order to gain their votes. Notice, the favor from the "people", not the "country".
How can we know if the favor of the people is beneficial for the country? If I could be a politician and without any concern for the national interests, then isn't it much easier to simply gain the favor of the people by giving them some cash with returns of their favor.
Isn't it possible? The answer is obviously yes! What happens when morality do not matter in order to gain the seats in the national parliament? That means, there could be certain possibility that the politicians without "necessary morals" will be able to gain their seats and ruler over our heads.
I do not say anyone does (or has ever done this), as I hope it would not happen. However, morality of the people in the country does always matter. What could possibly happen when we cast our votes for someone who gave us 200 baht for each vote? If we are lucky, then that dude will give us great policies in the parliament to improve our quality of lives. But for most cases, we might not be that lucky.
Voting for someone does matter more than just the matter of like or dislike. Before casting our valuable votes for any dude from any party, we must carefully read his/her policies and how they would benefit us and our country. In the other hand, I am not saying that we shouldn't collect the money from whoever gave us his/her money to gain votes. Surprise? Let me explain why.
In Thai election system, we are not allowed to notice if our friends or other people in our society have given their votes to anyone. For example, I will not know if my father has voted for whoever to be seating in the parliament, unless I asked him to see if he wrote an "X" beside any politician's name. Therefore, if you anyone gave you 200 baht for a vote, it is not a necessity that you must only cast your vote for that dude. Your 200 baht cash will not disappear from your hands if you do not vote for that dude. What's the result? Free money!
Unfortunately, if you did vote for him/her in order to remain loyal and truthful for the person who gave you a little (yes, very little) benefits in your pocket without really concerning about the national interests, sooner or later you and your country will suffer much more.

Administrator
